Department Profile
The Fixed Income Division is comprised of Interest Rate and Currency Products, Credit Products and Distribution. Professionals in the Division assess and actively manage risk, trade securities, and structure as well as execute innovative transactions in the fast-paced and constantly changing global markets. Morgan Stanley aligns its municipal investment banking, underwriting, sales, trading, lending, and M&A advisory in one integrated organizational group under the umbrella of the Municipal Securities Division.
Background on the Team
Within Municipal Securities, Municipal Lending provides direct capital to public sector entities and not-for-profit institutions in the United States. The group deploys Morgan Stanley's balance sheet to purchase securities or commit funding in the form of direct-registered loans. Distinct functions within the Municipal Lending group include client coverage and deal origination, quantitative structuring and credit analysis, and ongoing portfolio risk management.
Primary Responsibilities
·Ongoing Portfolio Monitoring and Reporting: support the desk's risk management processes by collecting, synthesizing, and presenting internal portfolio data on a recurring basis, including daily P&L summaries, daily portfolio credit and risk snapshots, and portfolio trends over specified time periods
·Market Data Analysis and Presentation: support new business origination by collecting, synthesizing, and presenting publicly available market and trade data, including but not limited to comparable transaction pricing, secondary market trading history, and analysis of investor holdings
·Product Marketing Support & Presentations: create and maintain standardized marketing pages for unique product offerings, including market snapshots and lending transaction case studies
·New Business and Ongoing Portfolio Credit Analysis: collect and synthesize financial statements and gather public news on prospective borrowers as well as portfolio constituents to aid in credit analysis for new business origination and ongoing portfolio credit surveillance
·Management Reporting & COO Functions: assist with ad hoc projects for the Municipal Securities COO team, including quarterly business updates to senior leaders
Skills Desired
·Undergraduate degree, preferably in a quantitative field such as quantitative finance, math, computer science, or engineering
·Basic knowledge of Fixed Income products
·Proficient in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
·Working knowledge of Python and VBA
·Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
·Highly organized, detail-oriented and thorough
·Ability to multi-task
·Ability to work collaboratively on group projects and independently on individual assignments
